The streets of Istanbul have a storied past. Its history echoes through the ancient alleys and modern avenues alike, rising from the bustle of its bazaars, the prayers of its religious houses, and the lapping of the Bosphorus. This rich tapestry of sound has been woven into its musical landscape over centuries and wraps around every corner, resident and guest of the city. Istanbul’s music forms its vibrant essence, its beating heart and its indominable soul.

This concert is part of the centenary celebrations of the Republic of Türkiye, the last caretakers of Istanbul’s musical heritage. Through the harmonious blend of kanun, oud, kemençe, and percussions, the ‘Spirit of Istanbul’ will sweep through the streets of Glasgow and Dublin this May.

In two evenings celebrating the musical legacy of Istanbul, the "Spirit of Istanbul" Concert will take place at Glasgow University Union and Trinity College Dublin on May 22nd and May 24th, 2024, respectively, at 7 pm.

With Turkish Maqam Music's inherited tones, the ensemble will take listeners on a musical journey that touch their hearts.

This event is organised in collaboration with the TISS (Turkish Intercultural Society in Scotland) and Trinity College Dublin, and supported by Turkish Airlines, these concerts are part of the centenary celebrations of the Republic of Türkiye, the custodian of Istanbul's musical heritage.

Yunus Emre Institute (Turkish: Yunus Emre Enstitüsü ) was established as a foundation in 2007 with a specific aim to promote the history, culture and language of Turkey.  It was named after the famous 13th century Poet Yunus Emre. This bridge-building mission has resulted in 85 branches of the institute opening around the world, including in London in November 2010. The institute plays an important role in education and culture: it is one of the primary places in Britain to learn Turkish. Located in Maple Street, Fitzrovia, it houses an extensive library that is open to students and academics; and it regularly holds an array of classes and events to teach and promote traditional and contemporary Turkish art and Turkish culture. In doing so, the Yunus Emre Enstitüsü seeks to increase the cultural exchange and improve the friendship between Turkey and the United Kingdom.
